cows milk and mothers milk
Swedish university study shows mothers that drink cows milk while breastfeeding can lead to colic in their babies. Althought this is not a home run as far as numbers go it does occur more often than the placebo patients. The study was a double blind crossover consisting of 66 mothers who breast fed. They were all put on a diet without cows milk, 35 of the babies colic disappeared, 2 of the mothers...
Sucrose does not lessen colic
I have to admit that I did not buy the full pdf file, mainly because the study was with only 19 infants. That number is too small to be bullet proof. 12 out of 19 babies improved. But the summary does not say what improved means. Worth a try? http://adc.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/76/4/356 There is an effect on infants that stops them crying when given sweet sucrose, so they did a study to see if...
Temporary Lactose intolerance ?
Is colic temporary lactose intolerance? In my opinion no, as there are breastfeeding mothers who don’t drink cows milk that still have colicky babies. This study linked below shows something surprising to me, namely that the crying time was reduced by between  10%-38% when lactase was used (lactase helps digest cows milk lactose). I am still not that convinced, read on here http://www3.inte...
Chiropractors cannot help colic
Apparently chiropractic spinal manipulation has no significant effect on infantile colic No surprise for me here. http://adc.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/archdischild;84/2/138 Apparently chiropractic spinal manipulation has no significant effect on infantile colic according to this study. No surprises here. http://adc.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/archdischild;84/2/138 ...
Colic linked to sleep and feeding
Brown Univerity Colic clinic reveal a trend in colicky babies. According to to research done at the Brown University Colic Clinic babies with colic nearly always have an interrelated set of feeding, sleep and stimulation problems. To figure out how to fix the problems, they tackle them starting with feeding & gastric problems, then sleep, I too think it is important to tackle the feeding and g...
Informal study shows high rate of reflux in colic babies
Informal study at Brown University Colic Clinic shows high rate of GERD, up to 75%. http://www.parents.com/baby/care/colic/inside-a-colic-clinic/?page=3 Informal study at Brown University Colic Clinic shows high rate of GER (reflux), up to 75%. http://www.parents.com/baby/care/colic/inside-a-colic-clinic/?page=3 While I don’t think that reflux is the cause of unstopping crying, I think it ma...
Larger Study unable to find root cause of colic
article 2002 study of 856 infants showed that the cause of colic is still unexplained (based their questions) The study carried out in Canada seemed to rule out diet, and focused on mental health of the family. Ultimately concluding that much of the cause of colic remains unexplained. It also concluded that breastfeeding does not have a protective effect on the development of colic. This was a sur...
Yet another study linking Cows Milk to colic
This again is only a small study, 19 babies. But 68% improvement when taken off cows milk is quite significant In my case my first son is lactose intolerant, and we did not find out to wait if my second son was, we put him straight on to Nutrigimen (hypoallergenic formula) The link is to the pdf file complete article This again is only a small study and a little old (1989), only 19 babies. But 68%...
Another study recommends parent training for colic
Article by Connecticut School of Medicine says that in most cases can be treated with education and coaching. It also goes on to say that sometimes it can be gastrointestinal problems. But this is to be expected as it is written from the perspective of a pediatric gastroenterologist. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7936776 Article by Connecticut School of Medicine says that in most cases colic ...
Parent training the key to colic
Forget baby gas, forget cows milk cures, we already know they are not the cause of colic. Deal directly with the crying and save time. Using hypoallergenic formula as a solution to colic has been recognized as a winning way to reduce the daily crying time for colicky babies (cows milk being hard to digest). The other main one is to deal with ingested gas. But a study way back in 1988 showed that c...
