Larger Study unable to find root cause of colic
A 2002 study of 856 infants showed that the cause of colic is still unexplained (based on their survey questions)
The study carried out in Canada seemed to rule out diet, and focused on mental health of the family. Ultimately concluding that much of the cause of colic remains unexplained.
It also concluded that breastfeeding does not have a protective effect on the development of colic. This was a surprise, as much of what I have read claims the opposite. However, other studies of breastfed babies seem to have normal rates of colic, and one study suggesting that mothers that drink cows milk while breastfeeding aggravate colic.
This study attempted to link mental health of the family to colic, with some success, but not conclusive.
I also believe that mental health of the family does not have a large bearing on the cause of colic. It may affect the crying time, but that has little to do with the cause.
