Baby colic
Part of the information was taken from my book. Colic is rough on Parents and treating colic effectively has been a very inaccurate science, with the most effective treatment being more of a shotgun approach to the problem rather than a clinical approach.
Part of the problem of trying to treat the percieved ailment of colic in my opinion is that colic is not a single ailment. To try to treat multiple ailments as a single ailment is doomed from the start.
The most popular theories that I have read most recently are actually very convincing even though they are quite unrelated. One of the theories is that colic is caused by gas ingested while baby is feeding. This theory is backed by my personal experience as well as many other parents and doctors. I was even more confused after I read of a theory that colic is actually due to baby having kind of withdrawal symptoms, withdrawal from the womb. Or more accurately that the baby was not ready to leave the womb but had to because it was getting too big. There was also much evidence of this by measuring times that babies often get colic. ie after 12 weeks babies tend to reduce their colic, which of course matches the theory that babies are born 12 weeks too early and are not mentally ready to function until after 12 weeks.
I believe that both of these theories add up to the most probable cause of colic behaviour in infants.
Does knowing this information help you with colic? Generally no. But amazingly it does help explain why many of the remedies that mothers have used for centuries work. Which further enhances these theories’ validity.
What are these remedies? These remedies start with simple was to stop baby crying, and continue on with was to reduce all the factors that attribute to a colicy baby starting to cry in the first place. The result is a much happier baby, and to a greater degree not only a happy parent, but a more confident parent that can predict and reduce their babies colic uncomfort.
