First 3 months of baby’s life
The first 12 weeks (3 months) of a baby’s life are different. Baby runs on instinct and reflex and many normal reactions are still being developed.
This is one of the popular theories at the moment, and in my opinion is one of the 2 best theories of what colic is.
To boil it down into language that I can use (and understand) , at 12 weeks colic will reduce in babies because babies are old enough to function in the world outside the womb.
It sounds odd, but basically babies would be much better off if they could stay in the womb for another 12 weeks. But due to the size of baby’s head, and the biology of humans, we need to have a 9 month gestation rather than a 12 month gestation.
I first thought this was a load of rubbish when I first read it. But when you add up the evidence then things start to fall in line with this theory.
For example here are some questions that were answered by the explanation above and started making me a believer.
•   Why does the baby like to listen to similar noises that it hears in the womb, long after being born?
•   Why does baby like being jiggled or carried like in the womb.
•   Why does baby like the dark?
•   Why do many problems seem to fade away at 12 weeks?
Now that I have had 2 kids I can also say that at around 12 weeks I have observed major changes in baby. There is more recognition, interaction and awareness around this time. It’s as if baby’s brain has started to take some control over pure instinct.
Even if this theory does not jive with your beliefs, there can be no denying that most babies will start to sleep better and seem happier after 12 weeks. So the 12 week landmark is a good milestone to aim for for a few things.
One of the main things to aim for at 12 weeks is to try to get baby sleeping longer if not most of the night through.
YOU CAN GO THE DISTANCE
One of the main things to remember if you are struggling with sleep or stress is that it is most likely a temporary situation, and for some parents the mere fact of getting to 12 weeks will be enough , because if you are one of the lucky ones then baby will be much happier and more calm after 12 weeks.
Think about it as a weekly goal, and if you use the 5 steps you will find that those 12 weeks will not be as bad as all that.
