Old School baby soother
Soothing babies has been around as long as crying babies have been around, which is a really long time
. I will let one of my top 5 tips for soothing a baby out of the bag. Although I have never met any cavemen or cavewomen, I am pretty sure they would have tried lots of ways to soothe their babies and get them to stop crying.
This top 5 tip of mine is of course not mine at all, it is an “old school” method that has been in use since before records were kept. It is called the “Swaddle” Before I started researching and studying about crying babies this was the only method besides rocking in a cradle that I had ever heard of. The fact that it is so well known is testament to how well this technique works. It is a great tip, but my other techniques are much better and so this tip unfortunately it only makes it to number four on my list of top 5 tips.
The word Swaddle is a word that means to wrap something in bandages. In our case we will not be using bandages but it is basically the same idea. We will be wrapping our baby in a snug blanket.
To swaddle your baby you will need a blanket of about 30-40 inches square, this blanket will be wrapped in a certain way so that the baby’s arms and legs have restricted movement. In particular the baby’s arms cannot reach the face. Probably the most common method of swaddling is described in the steps below.
1. place square blanket on flat surface (I normally use a bed) so the bottom point is pointing back at you (makind a diamond)
2. fold the top corner towards the bottom corner, placing it about half way from the middle point and the bottom point.(shape is like superman emblem)
3. place the baby so that baby’s feet point to the bottom corner and baby’s neck is on the top edge, half way along.
4. hold baby’s right arm to it’s side, and hold it there, hold the top right of the sheet and fold it to the bottom right of the sheet, then wrap the overlap underneath baby. (it is tricky at first to hold baby’s arm down)
5. while keeping everything snug, grab the bottom point and move it up over baby’s left shoulder and tuck excess behind the shoulder. (you will need to be quick)
6. now grab the left point and wrap over to the right and wrap the excess underneath baby.
It sounds complicated like that, there are diagrams in my “how to stop a baby crying” book on how to best do this. Or there are probably some good swaddling videos on youtube
